CYBER BLOG: How to create a strong password

What is a strong password?

A strong password is one which is very secure. Below describes some easy steps on how to create a strong password.

What should be included in your strong password?

A strong password should consist of numbers, upper and lower case letters and symbols (use the space bar!) Having a password that consists of sixteen characters will make it almost impossible to hack. That’s right just because a website asks for a minimum of eight characters doesn’t mean you have to stop there!

I bet sixteen characters seem like an intimating number. How could you possibly remember a password that long? What you could do is think of three or four memorable words. For example, you come into work and grab your green mug for a cup of coffee and then sit down at your desk and look outside the window to see the river. Take the words ‘green’, ‘coffee’ and ‘river’ and you already have sixteen characters. You just need to, capitalise some letters, add some numbers and symbols and you’ve created a strong password that’s easy to remember because it’s something you see and do every day.

What shouldn’t you do?

Remember hackers know all the tricks you are planning to use like swapping the letter ‘a’ with the ‘@’ symbol or the letter ‘i’ with the number ‘1’. That’s why it’s important to not include any personal information in your password e.g. birthdays, family or pet’s names or addresses. Also, try to avoid starting your password with a capital letter.

You should also never use the same password more than once or different variations of the same password. Remember don’t share your password with anyone!
