Established in 1989, Secured by Design (SBD) is the title for a group of National Police projects focusing on the design and security for new build and refurbished residential developments, commercial premises, schools, leisure facilities and by its nature, most aspects of the built environment.  SBD supports the principles of ‘designing out’ the opportunities for crime through physical means and security processes.  There are two primary aspects to Secured by Design, the “Developers Award” which recognises best practice in the design and development of the built environment and the "Products Award” given to manufacturers / suppliers of products which have met testing standards achieving recognised criteria to provide security of a standard acceptable by government and police. SBD works with the security industry and product testing organisations to create these high levels of security standards through responding to crime trends, and is key in the development of a number of the UK’s security standards.
