SBRC attend ASSC Conference to champion best fire safety practice in the self-catering sector

On Tuesday 29th October, Group Commander Chris Getty, SFRS Head of Fire Safety Enforcement and Watch Commander Gary Wood, seconded officer to the Scottish Business Resilience Centre attended the annual conference of the Association of Scottish Self-Caterers hosted by the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow to engage with their members and deliver a presentation on legislative fire safety guidance and reduction of UFAS – Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals.

Founded in 1978, the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers is the leading source of knowledge on short-term letting and holiday homes in Scotland. The ASSC is the only trade body representing the interests of the traditional self-catering sector. It has more than 650 Members, operating in excess of 7,000 self-catering properties throughout Scotland, from city centre apartments, to rural cottages, to lodges and chalets, to castles. The ASSC commits its members to maintaining the principles of quality, integrity, cleanliness, comfort, courtesy and efficiency and to offering visitors to Scotland consistently high standards within their self-catering properties.

The theme of this year’s ASSC Conference and Exhibition was Scottish Self-Catering: A Bright Global Future. Attendees gained essential insights into future developments in the sector, benefiting from the experience and knowledge of international experts, and took home valuable and essential practical knowledge that will benefit their businesses and the sector.

Group Commander Getty delivered an insightful presentation on legislative fire safety compliance and general guidance for owners and operators of short term let properties which was well received by attendees. Throughout the conference, Group Commander Getty and Watch Commander Wood engaged with conference attendees offering guidance and advice on fire safety within the sector, answering delegates questions on a wide variety of fire safety topics.

Group Manager Getty said, “I was delighted to speak today at the ASSC annual conference in Glasgow. This gave us the opportunity to engage directly with the self-catering sector including individuals and sector related organisations on fire safety topics and the mitigation of UFAS. It was a fantastic forum for raising further fire safety awareness in ensuring the safety of guests resorting in their premises and highlight the benefits of good fire safety management to ensure business continuity. We would like to thank the ASSC for inviting us to attend and look forward to meeting delegates again in the future.”

Watch Commander Gary Wood said, “The conference afforded us the opportunity to discuss at first hand with delegates the very important subject of fire safety within this type of property. It also afforded me the opportunity to raise awareness of the SBRC’s recently launched free Retail Resilience Award program and Safer Stay Assured Initiative, allowing me to network with external organisations and individuals to ensure that Scotland’s self-catering businesses are receiving all the assistance they require to maintain safety within their premises and continue to ensure that these crucial to Scotland’s tourism market businesses can trade safely and securely.”
